VISION STATEMENT
College Awareness and Preparation Program Mentoring Program envisions an increase in the number of Latino students pursuing, accessing and succeeding in higher education institutions making their dreams come true.
PROGRAM GOALS
- To increase the number of Rhode Island Latino students entering institutions of higher education and post graduate programs.
- To create an information and support center where students and their families can find support and assistance to access higher education.
- To provide culturally competent and linguistically appropriate support for families wanting to access college information.
- To partner with Secondary schools, higher education institutions and organization and other community based and student groups to facilitate the process of applying to college and remove barriers to access.
PROGRAM OBJECTIVES CAPP_RI FELLOW ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS CAPP_RI MENTOR ELIGIBILITY POLICY
It is the policy of the College Awareness and Preparation Program that each participating mentor must meet the defined eligibility criteria. Mentoring volunteers should be knowledgeable of and understand all eligibility criteria required for mentor and CAPP_RI Fellow participation in the program.
Extenuating circumstances may be reviewed at the discretion of the program coordinator and acceptance may then be allowed with the written approval of the executive director and representative of the board of directors when all eligibility requirements are not clearly met. These instances are expected to be rare.
MENTOR ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
- Be at least 18 years of age
- Reside in the Greater Providence and neighboring communities
- Be willing to adhere to all QIA and CAPP_RI policies and procedures
- Agree to a one-year commitment to the program
- Commit to spending a minimum of two hours a month with the CAPP_RI Fellow
- Be willing to communicate with the CAPP_RI Fellow weekly
- Complete the screening procedure
- Agree to attend mentor trainings as required (Margarita Cepeda Leadership Institute)
- Be willing to communicate regularly with the program coordinator and submit monthly meeting and activity information
- Have access to an automobile or reliable transportation
- Have a clean criminal history
- Have never been accused, arrested, charged, or convicted of child abuse or molestation
- Not be a convicted felon. If the applicant has been convicted of a felony then they may be considered only after a period of seven years with demonstrated good behavior and an appropriate and corrective attitude regarding past behaviors.
- Not have falsified information during the course of the screening process.
