College Awareness and Preparation Program of RI ~ CAPP-RI

MISION STATEMENT

CAPP-RI will promote the access of Latino students and inner city youth to higher education by improving the information, awareness and the preparedness of students, while in high schools; and to develop a program that will demystify the application process, financing and transition for students that are first generation college applicants.Additionally, provide information and guidance to their parents to ensure student success.

VISION STATEMENT

College Awareness and Preparation Program Mentoring Program envisions an increase in the number of Latino students pursuing, accessing and succeeding in higher education institutions making their dreams come true.

PROGRAM GOALS

  • To increase the number of Rhode Island Latino students entering institutions of higher education and post graduate programs.
  • To create an information and support center where students and their families can find support and assistance to access higher education.
  • To provide culturally competent and linguistically appropriate support for families wanting to access college information.
  • To partner with Secondary schools, higher education institutions and organization and other community based and student groups to facilitate the process of applying to college and remove barriers to access.

PROGRAM OBJECTIVES

  • Host Quarterly Workshops
  • Offering individual and family counseling around college admissions and access
  • Organize group discussion dialogues about overcoming the challenges in higher education institutions
  • Hold continuous formal and informal dialogues with College Admission Officers
  • Create a high school guidance counselors support system
  • Hold an SAT preparation and awareness program
  • Create a resource library and computer room with college information
  • Send Email updates with deadline reminders, host e-forums and e-bulletin boards
  • Create and maintain a Web page with information, resources and links about college
  • Continue hosting College Recruitment Nights (Co-Sponsored w/New England Counselors of Color Bridging Access to College)
  • Sponsor Financial Aid Information Nights and Seminars (Co-Sponsored by LADO)
  • Organize College Tours (co-sponsored with student organizations)
  • Organize Family Support Group – For families with students in college
  • Provide informational materials available in Spanish and English

CAPP_RI FELLOW ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

  • Be 13–18 years old (high school freshmen to seniors)
  • Reside in the Greater Providence and neighboring communities
  • Demonstrate a desire to participate in the program and be willing to abide by all QIA and CAPP_RI Program policies and procedures (available upon request)
  • Be able to obtain parental/guardian permission and ongoing support for participation in the program
  • Agree to a one-year commitment to the program
  • Commit to spending a minimum of two hours a month with the mentor
  • Be willing to communicate with the mentor weekly
  • Complete screening procedure
  • Agree to attend CAPP_RI Fellow trainings and workshops as required
  • Be willing to communicate regularly with the program coordinator and discuss monthly meeting and activity information

CAPP_RI MENTOR ELIGIBILITY POLICY

It is the policy of the College Awareness and Preparation Program that each participating mentor must meet the defined eligibility criteria. Mentoring volunteers should be knowledgeable of and understand all eligibility criteria required for mentor and CAPP_RI Fellow participation in the program.

Extenuating circumstances may be reviewed at the discretion of the program coordinator and acceptance may then be allowed with the written approval of the executive director and representative of the board of directors when all eligibility requirements are not clearly met. These instances are expected to be rare.

MENTOR ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Reside in the Greater Providence and neighboring communities
  • Be willing to adhere to all QIA and CAPP_RI policies and procedures
  • Agree to a one-year commitment to the program
  • Commit to spending a minimum of two hours a month with the CAPP_RI Fellow
  • Be willing to communicate with the CAPP_RI Fellow weekly
  • Complete the screening procedure
  • Agree to attend mentor trainings as required (Margarita Cepeda Leadership Institute)
  • Be willing to communicate regularly with the program coordinator and submit monthly meeting and activity information
  • Have access to an automobile or reliable transportation
  • Have a clean criminal history
  • Have never been accused, arrested, charged, or convicted of child abuse or molestation
  • Not be a convicted felon. If the applicant has been convicted of a felony then they may be considered only after a period of seven years with demonstrated good behavior and an appropriate and corrective attitude regarding past behaviors.
  • Not have falsified information during the course of the screening process.
